Does Islam steal a lot more freedom from people than Christianity?

Christianity used to be a lot like today’s Islam, right? But after the Dark Ages, Western people realized that it’s really bad to give religious institutions too much power; it makes them corrupt. But Muslims still haven’t realized this, have they? The Islamic world never had an enlightenment, in fact, the Islamic world had a revolution and it became even worse, right?
